Improv for Spiritual Care

Are you a chaplain, pastoral carer, spiritual care professional, or do you take on any role which requires you to engage in empathic listening?

Improv for spiritual care is for you. These workshops and courses are an offering I developed after I signed up for improv classes as a way to rediscover joy and silliness in the midst of feeling burnt out by my caring role. Not only was it a joyful oasis that was the highlight of my week, but I also noticed that during classes I was practising the same skills I was using in my role - empathy, non-verbal communication, non-judgemental acceptance, and more.

I decided to share these games with some other caring professionals and spiritual care volunteers after I saw a paper about an improv trial that was successful with people who cared for someone with dementia. It was a really lovely time of sharing together about our work which was refreshing, rejuvinating, wonderfully silly, and also helped us reflect on the vital skills we need in our roles.

I will be continuing to run improv evenings, and possibly a future course. These will usually be on Wednesday evenings in North Perth.

If you sign up to the newsletter, you will hear first about new offerings. I will also occasionally send through any cool research I find on this topic such as the paper which I mentioned above.
